Pickett is a 2018 Appendix gelding. We were reached out to, to help rescue him from a worsening situation. His original owner had already been prosecuted for his condition and numerous deceased horses on her farm. We could not say no, so we jumped in to action. Not much is known about Pickett’s previous history except that he was part of a hoarding situation and managed to escape with his life. We were also not properly advised that he was in such deplorable shape. We were under the assumption, based on a photo that we were shown, that he just needed some worming and basic groceries; that was not the case. We were not prepared for what stumbled off the trailer that day.

We are very blessed that our veterinarian lives across our pasture. He was able to come immediately. Pickett was a body condition score of 1; the worst. It was bad. However, he did have age on his side. He is young and had he been an older horse, the outcome probably would have been much different. He also had teeth that were in good shape, so that was a bonus as well. A fecal was ran and he was loaded with worms, so we addressed that. As his health and calorie intake improves, we will continue to run many other tests and watch his health closely.

Pickett is improving, albeit, slowly. It will take awhile to regain what he once was. He is so kind despite all that has happened to him. He needs a sponsor that is willing to go the distance! His journey of recovery will be a long one. He will have substantial vet and medical needs.
