Thestral Farms has made it a mission to open its doors to 15 sport horses of any kind, seeking full retirement. Full retirement due to age or career ending ailments/injuries. Where the residents may live out their glory days in an amazing herd environment, catered to their individual personalities and needs, with owners that live on site offering around the clock detailed care. It is our deepest passion to see that the once glorious sport horses that took care of us in their prime, receive the care and dedication they so selflessly gave! They deserve love, peace and an appropriate environment as they live out their end of days or retirement life.
We are not a retirement boarding facility. Kentucky boasts many fantastic facilities that cater to retired horses and even more specifically, to the thoroughbred. Instead, we fill a gap where owners that can’t afford this ever increasing form of board, can turn over their babies to let them retire and live their best life in a highly desirable environment and spectacular care.
Our pastures are large with rolling hills, streams, lakes and natural large shade trees; the very definition of the Kentucky Bluegrass dream! We are surrounded on all sides by 300 acres of rotating crops, so privacy and safety are never an issue. The farm has gates for added security.
We are a not for profit, federally and state recognized 501(c)3. Donations go DIRECTLY to the care of all our elderly/retired guests. Those that were relinquished to the farm for retirement purposes only. Please consider donating to the farm where we will allocate funds to pay feed bills, veterinary care, farrier fees, supplements and any medication necessary for the wellbeing and support of these retirees. Even better, consider becoming a monthly sponsor of a horse listed below!
We prefer donating via Zeffy. Zeffy is a 100% fee free platform for nonprofits. Which means that we get 100% of your donation, no other donation platform offers this! Zeffy offers all credit cards, Apple/Google Pay and even ACH from your bank. However, if you would like to donate via another channel, please see those options below. All donations are tax deductible and Zeffy also provides your tax receipt after receiving your donation.
We pride ourselves in transparency! All our financials are available upon requests! Some we even post directly to our Facebook page.

Forage is the main component of a horses diet. A horse requires 2% of their body weight, daily, in the form of hay or quality grazing grass. Luckily, here at the farm, we have wonderfully maintained and quality grazing for the sanctuary from late spring through fall. Once winter hits, for 5 months, we feed 100% hay! Let’s do the math for those 10 horses. What does it cost to feed them every winter?
Let’s average their weight at 1,000 lbs each.
1,000 X .02 = 20 lbs of hay, daily
20 X 15 horses = 300
300 X 30 days in a month = 9,000
9,000 X 5 months = 45,000 lbs
45,000 \ 65 lbs bales = 693 bales
693 X 11.00 each bale = $7,623 to feed for winter months
We average $8-9,000 each winter for sanctuary horses, with delivery fees. Prices locally will always fluctuate with the weather that year. Some winters, hay will have to be hauled in from out of state when there is a drought; this also must doubles the price of the hay due to gas prices and hauling expenses. This factor is NOT taken in to account for the math listed above!
Each horse requires annual vet care and routine vaccines.
Annual Dental $250 each
Annual Rabies Vaccine $45 each
Annual 5 Way Vaccine $55 each
Biannual Fecal $35 each
Annual Sheath Cleaning (geldings) $45 each
Average Veterinary Incidentals for Accidents $1200 each
*In major incidents of colic, surgery costs are typically $10,000 - $18,000 depending on the severity. At which time, decisions are made regarding end of life options based on the horses quality of life with prior ailments.
Typical annual expenditure for each horse annually $1,665
$1,665 x 15 = $24,975 each year vet expenses
Luckily, the majority of the sanctuary horses are capable and well maintained barefoot. However, there are a couple that do require shoes to stay sound. Farrier care is scheduled every 5 week.
Basic trims $45 each
Front shoes $150 each
$45 X 13 = $585
10.5 cycles annually X $585 = $6,143 annually for trims
$150 x 2 = $300
$300 X 10.5 cycles = $3,150 annually for shoes
$6,143 + $3,360 = $9,504 annual farrier costs
Excel Senior
12 Bags per month X 12 Months = 144 Bags per Year
144 X $19.15 each = $2,757.60
Showtime
12 Bags per month X 12 Months = 144 Bags per Year
144 X $14.75 = $2,124.00
ProForce Senior
12 Bags per month X 12 Months = 144 Bags per Year
144 X $31.49 = $4,534.56
Grain Annual Total $9,416.16
We have 8 Sancturay residents that currently come in to the barn for feeding and medication. They typically stay in 4-6 hours depending on weather. These residents need shavings to stay comfortable in stalls, all horses do.
*The 8 residents go through approximately 25 bags a month.
$5.98 X 25 = $149.50 per Month
$149.50 X 12 = $1,794.00 Annually
Yearly, it costs the farm approximately $50,000 to maintain all current, 15 sanctuary horses. Remember, this does not include farm maintenance, machine maintenance or any labor costs. It also does not include supplements or medications, which we give to each sanctuary horse daily! The numbers and examples listed above are only for hay, grain, farrier, shavings and vet expenses, so very basics.
To keep the sanctuary running, we HAVE to have reliable and consistent donors and sponsorships! Please consider donating!
Zeffy is a 100% fee free donation platform for nonprofits. We are trying to fully navigate over to this platform! It is very easy to use and can also set up reoccurring payments for sponsorships. We are always in need of hay year round, but especially in winter! We start stock piling and storing hay in mid/late summer, but it all depends on the local weather too. We now have a local hay grower that specifically grows just for us! so we run up a tab with him all year to prepare for winter. So we need assistance to help pay that tab down! We get the biggest bill late summer/early fall when we start to also stock pile the larger round bales. Each bale is $8 delivered and each round is $45 delivered. Yearly for the residents, we will go through approximately $11,000 in hay and this hay is discounted for us! We have to pay our guy directly so to help with hay, donate to our Zeffy Hay Fund. Click the button below to be directed to there.
Want to send the sanctuary a gift? We have set up a gift list for all the items they use everyday and desperately need! We get a lot from Valley Vet Supply as they have very competitive prices and get to us quickly. We also purchase our vaccines from them. Follow this link to view the Gift List…
We use Performance Equine Nutritions exclusive formula of Aloe/MSM as an anti-inflammatory aid in ALL the sanctuary horses. This is an expensive undertaking! Unfortunately, there is no “Gift List” we can set up, so you would need to either text or call in your order and have the girls send it to us (they know us well, Jodi Register at Thestral farms, c/o Magical Menagerie).
Call Carla at: (707) 766-8624
Or text the team at: (707) 766-4446
This is our local feed store in Danville, KY. They provide all the grain and shavings for the sanctuary. They do not have an ability to create a “Gift List,” so you would have to call in. Larry is our manager that also delivers to the farm, you can place an order with him. For the sanctuary, we get mostly Elite Senior pellets (6 bags, every other week) and Showtime 12 (6 bags, every other week). With shavings, we get 15 bags (every other week). Click on the link below for their phone number.
If you are interested in donating directly to our vet for veterinary expenses, please call Town & Country Vet in Danville at:

Each of our residents requires a monthly sponsorship! Currently, we (the farm owners) are paying all their daily bills with zero assistance. Each horse will have individual requirements and needs. There are multiple sponsorship levels. Once a horse has a sponsor, it will be updated to reflect if any additional sponsorships are needed, or if they are fully sponsored and taken care of. Please note that our sponsorships do not include any form of board, farm maintenance, or time/labor to care for any of the animals. What you see included are only their daily basic needs being met.
TO START, Click on each individual horse to view their more specific needs and their sponsorship levels. There you will find the button to link you to the sanctuary’s Zeffy account.
You can check the box to give a reoccurring monthly donation. Please add in the notes, which horse you wish to sponsor, or send and email or Facebook Message to Jodi/the Sanctuary. If there is a specific need that horse has that you would like to assist with on a monthly basis, please write that in the note section or contact Jodi. There are a few horses with more intense medical and maintenance needs.
Sponsorship Levels
Star Sponsor $25
Honorable Sponsor $50
Bronze Sponsor $100
Silver Sponsor $150
Gold Sponsor $200
Platinum Sponsor $250

There are a few things that you need to know about relinquishing your horse To Magical Menagerie Sanctuary.
One, we are not a retirement boarding facility. We do not board horses. We take horses that had a career or were suppose to have a career and never managed to, due to a career ending injury or any other trying circumstance. Most come to us because retirement board has gotten so high and/or retirement in their state isn’t feasible for them. Kentucky is prime for equine retirement! However, Kentucky also boasts some of the nicest retirement facilities in the world! If you can afford it and want all the boarding amenities, send me an email and I can recommend a few. Again, we do not board horses.
Two, you must be able to get your horse to us or pay for the shipping. With how busy we are, we are unable to take a day away from the care of the sanctuary to come get your horse, unless you are local. Then maybe, we can arrange something.
Three, we will require that you offer the sanctuary some type of a donation. We can work with you on that once we are able to take your horse.
Last, we do have a waiting list that is usually full. We only take 15 sanctuary horses at any given time, as I do also have my own horses. So please visit the Contact Us page and send us an email or send Jodi a text message to open up the communication regarding your needs and what can be done.
WAITING LIST (Updated August 18, 2024))
None at this time…
Our volunteer orientation is mandatory to get on the schedule.
We hold volunteer orientations at the farm the first Tuesday of every month, during the summer (April through October), at 6PM.
During the winter months (November through March) we will hold the orientation the first Saturday of each month, at noon (12PM).
*You will be required to RSVP in order to come to the orientation. If no one is interested that month, it would be a waste of our time to sit around. So we need to know that you are coming! You can contact us via our Facebook Page or send us an email. You will need to provide us with your contact information to sign up.
At Thestral Farms safety is ALWAYS our priority! Safety is at the core of everything we do. You will learn the layout of the farm and how to properly handle the horses during orientation. You will learn about the various tasks we need the most help with and we can discuss the times that will work for us both to schedule you out here. We do also require that you sign a release of liability to participate in any thing horse or animal related.
… The Help…
We typically need help with the following:
Brushing and all aspects of grooming the sanctuary horses.
In the summer months, bathing and daily fly spray applications.
Mucking sanctuary horse stalls, cleaning non automatic waters and reapplying bedding.
Hand walks and grazing the property with the sanctuary horses as needed.
Farm Maintenance
Mowing pastures during the summer months.
Feeding and feed prep
General housekeeping in the barns
… Requirements to Volunteer…
We require that you be over 12 years old to volunteer; this is for safety reasons and liability. 15 and older are preferred, as these age groups require less oversight and can self manage their time and the various duties. You must be comfortable dropping your child off or volunteering with them. Age can be further discussed on a case by case basis, so just reach out.
Close toes shoes are mandatory!
A working mode of transportation is required. We do not have the time to pick people up.
The ability to follow instruction and guidance. The ability to stay on task with chores.
We do reserve the right to ask you to leave if we feel you can’t follow directions, are not practicing safety around the animals or are not a good fit. The wellbeing and peace of the animals is our TOP priority, 100% of the time.
